Condition

STRUCTURE The canvas has been lined. PAINT SURFACE The painting appears to be in good condition. There is no apparent damage or loss of paint. ULTRAVIOLET Examination under ultraviolet light reveals scattered retouching in the sky, and in the lower section of the painting, and infilling to craquelure overall. FRAME Held in a gilded wooden frame. The present painting commemorates the Amy Stockdale's safe return from a voyage to Sierra Leone under the command of Captain Gates (see Lloyd's List's for 17th October 1838). For details on this ship see D. McGregor, Schooners in Four Centuries, p. 43, in which he illustrates a print of the ship dating from 1893.
