  • inscribed, verso: Painted by / Mr. Chinnery / Bengal / 1812

Condition

STRUCTURE The canvas is unlined and in good, stable condition. There is one slightly raised bump in the upper right, but otherwise it is providing a firm, flat support for the painting. PAINT SURFACE The painting appears to be very good, untouched condition. There is one small scratch in the upper right, related to the raised section of canvas mentioned above, which has resulted in a small area of paint loss on the extreme upper right edge. There is an old and discoloured varnish overall ULTRAVIOLET Examination under ultraviolet light reveals no apparent signs of retouching or restoration and confirms the opacity of the varnish. FRAME Held in a gilded plaster and wooden frame.
