Catalogue Note

Two of the compositions, the Judgement of Solomon and the Reconciliation of Jacob and Esau, are closely derived from works by Rubens, the former from the work formerly in Brussels Town Hall (destroyed) and the latter from that in the Staatsgalerie, Schleissheim (see R.-A. d'Hulst and M Vandenven, Corpus Rubenianum Ludwig Burchard. Rubens. Part III. The Old Testament, London and New York 1989, pp. 146-50, cat. no. 46 (the former) and pp. 67-69, cat. no. 16, reproduced fig. 42 (the latter)). Another version of Abraham and Melchizedek was with A.S. Drey, Munich, in 1934 (as School of Rubens).
