Description
- Giuseppe Antonio Felice Orelli
- SAMSON and DELILAH
- oil on canvas
Condition
The canvas is unlined. A canvas join runs vertically down the centre of the canvas and this is visible on the paint surface.
The paint surface is secure and in good condition, under a yellowed varnish. Some detail in the work is well-preserved.
It seems that the canvas may once have been folded to reduce its size as there are raised, retouched fold lines approximately 3cm. in from each margin.
Inspection under UV light is impeded by the reflective varnish, but does reveal fine retouchings along the canvas join and confirms those along the old fold lines. It further reveals some extensive retouching to Samson's clothing and Delilah's left arm, and patches of old retouchings are indicated in the background. Otherwise, only a few more recent scattered retouchings are highlighted lower right, in the background upper left, on Delilah's white garment and on her hand.
Offered in a gilt wood frame in good condition.
