Condition

STRUCTURE The canvas has not been lined. PAINT SURFACE The painting appears to be in good stable condition. There is some very minor paint loss above the sitter's head in the upper centre and to the left of the sitter's knee in the lower left, as visible in the catalogue illustration. There is also evidence of minor abrasion to the canvas edge in the upper left and the centre left where it has come into contact with the frame, but other than that there is no apparent damage or loss of paint. There is a craquelure visible throughout and finely demarcated stretcher bar marks running parallel down both sides. ULTRAVIOLET Examination under ultraviolet light reveals the presence of a thick discoloured varnish overall which makes inspection difficult. FRAME Held in a gilded wood and plaster frame.
