Condition

STRUCTURE The canvas has been lined. PAINT SURFACE The painting appears to be in very good condition. There are two minor abrasions, the first in the top right of the lower right hand quadrant, the second in the lower centre on the sitter's knee, however that apart there is no further apparent damage or paint loss. ULTRAVIOLET Examination under ultraviolet light reveals a thick discoloured varnish overall and evidence of very very minor scattered retouching. FRAME Held in a splendid carved wood frame. Catalogue Note

The sitter was the second daughter of Charles Boyle, 3rd Earl of Burlington and Cork, the great connoisseur and amateur architect. She married in 1720, Charles Bruce, 3rd Earl of Ailesbury who had inherited from his mother Tottenham Park. This he proceeded to improve with the support and advice of his father-in-law. Lady Juliana died in 1739 and was buried at the Bruce family seat of Maulden.
