Condition

STRUCTURE The canvas has been lined. PAINT SURFACE The painting appears to be in very good condition. There is evidence of an old thick varnish overall. There would appear to be a repaired abrasion to the left of the sitter, visible only under raking light. ULTRAVIOLET Examination under ultraviolet light confirms the opacity of the varnish which itself makes further inspection difficult, however there seems to be some old minor scattered retouching overall. FRAME Held in a carved wood frame. Catalogue Note

The present portrait is the earliest known work by the artist, who probably reached Rome in 1642 in the company James Alban Gibbes. He became a member of the Academy of St Luke in Rome in 1648 and stayed until 1653 or 1654, when he travelled to Flanders.
