Condition

STRUCTURE Original panel which has very slightly bowed. PAINT SURFACE The painting appears to be in good condition with no apparent damages or losses. There is some minor wear to the sitter's face, neck and doublet and the paint remains thin in places, however this is to be expected given it's age. There is an uneven layer of discoloured varnish and a fine craquelure overall. ULTRAVIOLET Examination under ultraviolet light confirms the opacity of the varnish, and reveals some old minor retouching to the sitter's forehead, temple and nose. There is some further minor retouching to a panel join in the upper right hand quadrant measuring approx 6cm.
