Description

  • Hendrik Johannes Knip
  • View of the bridge at San Moritz, Switzerland
  • Gouache and watercolor;
    an old label pasted to the back of the frame bears the inscription in brown ink: Vue du Pont St. Maurice en Suisse.

Provenance

With François Buffa & fils, Amsterdam (their label on back of frame)

Condition

Sold in modern wood and gilt frame. The drawing has been attached to wooden stretchers and then sandwiched behind glass, so was not seen out of the glass. There is some slightly spotting overall, which appears to have been re-touched in the sky. Overall, however, the impression is still very strong and the gouache is in good condition.
In response to your inquiry, we are pleased to provide you with a general report of the condition of the property described above. Since we are not professional conservators or restorers, we urge you to consult with a restorer or conservator of your choice who will be better able to provide a detailed, professional report. Prospective buyers should inspect each lot to satisfy themselves as to condition and must understand that any statement made by Sotheby's is merely a subjective qualified opinion.
NOTWITHSTANDING THIS REPORT OR ANY DISCUSSIONS CONCERNING CONDITION OF A LOT, ALL LOTS ARE OFFERED AND SOLD "AS IS" IN ACCORDANCE WITH THE CONDITIONS OF SALE PRINTED IN THE CATALOGUE.

Catalogue Note

Hendrik Johannes is known to have depicted the same view in three other gouaches, two in private collections and one sold, New York, Sotheby's, 25 January 2002, lot 147.  Each is painted from a slightly different angle to the present work, and they have differences in the staffage and the cluster of buildings near the bridge.

We are grateful to Michiel Jonker for confirming the attribution.
