Catalogue Note
This drawing, dated 1770, seems to predate the religious subjects which inspired Cades towards the later years of the century. Very finished and polished, almost sculptural, this also shows the strong influence of Raphael. It does not seem to relate to any known painted work, but could have been drawn as a work of art in its own right. Often these studies are not connected and their purpose in Cades's oeuvre is not known. They were very influential in the development of the Purist and Nazarene painters.
