  • Pair of Studies of Tulips with Butterflies
  • Both watercolor

Condition

Both unframed. Both are in reasonably good condition. A few isolated, pale fox marks. One is slightly yellowed towards the upper and right edges of the sheet, and is uneven along the left edge. The watercolour on both is still fresh and strong.

Catalogue Note

From the time of the 'Tulip Mania' in the 1630s, depictions such as these of individual specimens of tulip were immensely popular, and the prototypes from earlier 'tulip books' were repeated over and over.  The paper used in the present examples suggests that they, like the closely related sheets in the Christoph Müller Collection, were executed circa 1660.1
