Catalogue Note
This drawing most probably represents one of the colonial outposts in the Dutch East Indies, modern-day Indonesia. From the very beginning of the 17th century, the Dutch were the dominant European power in the region, and the trade in coffee, spices and sugar from Java, Sumatra and other nearby islands underpinned much of the great prosperity enjoyed by the Netherlands during the 17th century. The drawing was probably made by a sea captain or merchant, rather than a professional artist.
