Description

  • Conrad Meyer
  • Study of a standing female nude
  • Two colours of red chalk heightened with white chalk, on paper washed red;
    signed in black ink, lower right: C. Meÿer fecit.;
    bears extensive German inscription in brown ink on label attached to reverse of backing sheet and erased numbering in pencil at upper center of backing sheet and lower right corner: No 10 and 150

Condition

Unframed. Laid down on old backing sheet. Some small losses at the upper right and lower left corners. There are three very small, isolated dark spot stains near the upper right corner and at the centre right. Another to the left of the woman's left upper arm. There is what appears to be an old diagonal crease leading from the lower right corner, flattened out by the drawing being laid down. Otherwise the sheet is in good condition, the chalk still strong and fresh.

Catalogue Note

Although surely drawn from life, the pose adopted by the woman in this study may have been inspired by an antique sculpture of Venus.  A similar drawing by Meyer, on paper prepared red, of a 'Green Man' was sold Berlin, Galerie Bassenge, 1 December 2005, lot 5612.
