Catalogue Note
This study relates to a compositional drawing in the Uffizi, depicting the Circumcision: the angel is at the upper left, adoring the Holy Spirit. The drawing must have been made in preparation for an altarpiece, although the painting has not yet come to light.1 A red chalk study for the angel at the right of the composition, with a pose mirroring that of the angel in the present sheet, was sold in London, Sotheby's, 13 December 2001, lot 25.
