Catalogue Note

This drawing is clearly related to the portrait of Relmusto Lercari, one of the historical figures included in Cambiaso's decoration of the ceiling of the salone of Palazzo Lercari-Parodi, Genoa (fig. 1).  The central fresco records Megollo Lercari's founding in 1300 of the Genoese merchants' warehouse in Trebizond.  Surrounding that are cartouches enclosing representations of distinguished figures from the family's past.  We are grateful to Mary Newcome Schleier for endorsing the attribution to Cambiaso and informing us that the ceiling is dated 1572.

A weaker version of this drawing is in the Uffizi. A  compositional study for the central fresco was in the Suida-Manning collection and a study for the figure of Megollo Lercari is also in the Uffizi.2
