Catalogue Note

Barthel Beham, the short-lived elder brother of Sebald, was primarily active as a portrait painter and designer of woodcuts.  Very few drawings by his hand are known, but the types of these two portraits are reminiscent of his works.  It is also possible that they were made as designs for portrait medals.
