Description

  • Giovanni Baglione
  • The Fall of Icarus
  • Black chalk and brush and gray wash heightened with white on ochre prepared paper

Provenance

Bears unidentified collector's mark, verso: de B. (not in Lugt);
Robert Udny (L.2248);
C.R. Sharp;
With R.M. Light & Co;
bought by David Daniels, March, 1969,
his sale, London, Sotheby's, 25 April 1978, lot 18

Condition

Laid down on the old (pre-Udney) mount. Vertical creases in paper most probably due to the drying of the sheet. Minor loss, top left, and at the bottom margin also a few minor tears. Minor spots, especially at the bottom of the sheet, but condition otherwise good. The original stronger in color than the image in the catalogue.

Catalogue Note

A very finished study for the falling Icarus, this drawing was sold in David Daniels' sale as Giovanni Baglione.  The attribution was proposed by Philip Pouncey although he also saw affinities with the work of Baglione's contemporary Gaspare Celio, who was also active in Rome.
