Description

  • Jean-Baptiste Monnoyer
  • A still life with tulips, a hyacinth and other flowers in a glass vase on a stone plinth
  • oil on canvas

Condition

The canvas is unlined. The paint surface is clean and secure, with the colours and details of the arrangement well preserved. No major damages to the work are apparent. The brown pigments used in the background have become a little thin in parts but this abrasion is not obtrusive. Inspection under UV light is slightly impeded by the glossy, reflective varnish which covers the work but does reveal fairly extensive retouchings to the background, and far fewer scattered spot retouchings and strengthenings to the flowers and vase. Much of the arrangement, including the hyacinth and foreground daffodils, seem to remain untouched. Offered in an ornate carved gilt wood frame which is a little knocked but in good, presentable condition.
