Catalogue Note

ENGRAVED
By the artist in mezzotint for The Paradise of John Milton, published by Septimus Prowett, London, 1827

An illustration from Book II of Milton's Paradise Lost, the present painting is the largest and most important known oil relating to the series of 24 engravings Martin designed for Prowett's 1827 edition. This series is generally considered among the artist's finest achievements, and Milton's work, particularly the imagery of the Satanic underworld, continued to be an important influence throughout his career.
