ULTRAVIOLET Examination under ultraviolet light reveals two very small dots of retouching near the sitter's ear, as well as small area of minor retouching in background, upper left. Catalogue Note

A study of just the face has been called Mrs Lock, and it is possible that the sitter in the present work could be Cecilia Margaret Ogilvie (1775-1824), the daughter of the Dowager Duchess of Leinster and her second husband William Ogilvie. Cecilia married Mr Charles Lock, British Consul-General in Naples and Egypt, by whom she had three daughters.

We are grateful to Alex Kidson for his assistance with the cataloguing of this lot and for confirming the attribution following first hand inspection.
