Catalogue Note
Agostino Masucci was Carlo Maratti's heir in Rome and continued his master's classsicizing style well into the 18th century. Winner of prizes at Rome's Accademia di San Luca from 1706-1708, he became an academician there in 1724 and was soon commissioned to paint several important altarpieces. He established himself as the leading portraitist for Grand Tourists as well as for the great families of Rome, notably the Rospigliosi for whom he decorated the interior of the third floor of Palazzo Rospigliosi-Pallavicini.
Masucci was also much admired in Spain and Portugal where he won important commissions, including a Holy Family for the basilica at Mafra. Aside from his standing as Rome's premier portraitist, it is this link with the Iberian peninsula which would have made the present sitter all the more keen to sit to Masucci during his visit to Rome.
The attribution has been endorsed by Dottor Francesco Petrucci (written communication with the present owner).
