Description

  • Jacopo Amigoni
  • David and Bathseba
  • oil on canvas

Provenance

Private collection, Italy.

Literature

F. Malaguzzi Valeri, 'Ignoti dipinti veneti del Settecento a Milano', in Rassegna d'Arte, 1914, XIV, p. 5, reproduced p. 4 (as Jacopo Amigoni).

Condition

The canvas has been relined. The paint surface is secure and in good condition with much of the original impasto preserved under a dirty old varnish. There is a tiny old restored loss on Bathsheba stomach, as visible in the catalogue illustration. Thorough inspection under UV light is impeded by the aforementioned varnish but some old retouching work upper left in the sky is just discernable. Offered in a gilt wood and plaster frame in fair condition.

Catalogue Note

Amigoni treated the subject of David and Bathsheba and Susanna and the Elders on other occasions, most notably in the works in the Staatliche Museen, Berlin (see A. Scarpa Sonino, Jacopo Amigoni, Soncino 1994, pp. 124-129, cat. nos. 31 and 32). Though the present and following lots are of very similar dimensions and fit together both compositionally and iconographically, the handling of the works is different. The delicacy of the figures and the soft flesh tones of the present work unmistakebly point to Amigoni while the following lot is more likely to have been executed by an artist working in his immediate circle.

The attribution of the present lot has been endorsed by Dottoressa Annalisa Scarpa Sonino.
