Description

  • Jacob Salomonsz. van Ruysdael
  • herders on lightly wooded raised ground overlooking an expansive river landscape
  • signed lower right: J van Ruijs...
  • oil on canvas

Condition

The canvas has been relined. The stretcher has marked the surface of the painting, approximately 5cm. in along the right hand margin. The paint surface is in good condition, under a glossy varnish. The brown tones of the painting are fairly abraded and a fine craquelure runs throughout the painting. There are three old restored damages in the clouds upper right which are visible to the naked eye due to unevenness on the surface of the painting and discoloured retouchings to these areas. The most notable of these measures approximately 4 by 8 cm. and the other two measure approximately 3 by 2 cm. each. No other damages are apparent. Inspection under UV light is slightly impeded by the reflective varnish but does confirm the aforementioned retouchings and further reveals extensive infilling of craquelure in stretches across the painting but very few other retouchings. Offered in a stained wood and parcel gilt frame in good condition, if a little rubbed.

Catalogue Note

The warm tones and serenity of this composition are characteristic of the work of Jacob Salomonsz. van Ruysdael, son of Salomon van Ruysdael and cousin of Jacob van Ruisdael. The format and staffage of the current work can be compared to his Wooded landscape with shepherds and cattle at a ford, dated 1655, in the Frans Hals Museum, Haarlem (see Painting in the Haarlem 1500-1850, The collection of the Frans Hals Museum, Ghent 2006, p. 591, cat. no. 406, reproduced).
