Description

  • oil on canvas

Condition

The canvas has an old relining, which remains sound. The painting has been more recently cleaned but is overal in good condition. Some abrasion is apparent in the brown pigments of the tablecloth and some of the figures' hair, as well as the blue/grey of the upper background wall, but this is very slight and by no means obtrusive. Inspection under ultra violet light shows that the canvas was previously folded 5 cm from the right margin, parallel to the left hand and upper margin and 2cm. in from and parallel to the bottom edge, and the subsequent repairs to the old tack holes are visible along each of these lines. These are not visible to the naked eye. Small damages, including one measuring approx. 2cm2 upper right, to the right of the curiosity seller's hand, and the other lower right, oval shaped and measuring 7cm. by 2.5 cm. are also visible under UV light but the great majority of the painting appears intact and very well preserved. This lot is sold with a 19th century Dutch style ebonised wood frame with ripple mouldings, in good condition but with some minor damages.
