Condition

The flat, stable support consists of a single oak panel, bevelled on all sides. The paint surface is clean and secure, under a thick, glossy varnish. The colours and detail of the painting are well preserved. No major damages to the work are discernible. Inspection under UV light is greatly impeded by the aforementioned, reflective varnish. Some small, scattered spot retouchings to the lady's right forearm are revealed but it is difficult to make out any further retouchings to the work. Offered in a wooden slip frame in good condition.

Catalogue Note

Formerly attributed to Pieter Cornelisz. van Slingelandt, the authorship of this charming panel was only revealed with the recent discovery of the signature and date after cleaning.  Jan van Haensbergen was a student of Cornelis van Poelenburgh and is better known for his Italianate and mythological paintings in the style of his Master. Another genre scene by this artist can however be found in the Louvre, which even shares the dimensions and date of the current work (see Musée du Louvre, Catalogue illustré des Peintures. Ecoles flamande et hollandaise, Paris 1979, p. 162). We are grateful to Fred G. Meijer for confirming the attribution on the basis of photographs.
