Description

  • Paul de Vos
  • an extensive landscape with three hounds surprising a wild boar and its young
  • oil on canvas

Provenance

Anonymous sale, London, Christie's, 25 March 1905, lot 104 (as F. Snyders), for £60 to Gale;
Anonymous sale ("The Property of a Lady"), London, Sotheby's, 16 December 1999, lot 138 (as Paul de Vos and Jan Wildens) for £23,000.

Condition

The canvas has a modern, firm relining. The paint surface is clean and secure with a fine craquelure running throughout. No major damages are apparent. The browns in the foreground and the black pigments used for the dogs have become rather abraded, and some retouchings to these areas, such as to the ears of the central dog, are visible to the naked eye. Inspection under UV light confirms these retouchings and further reveals fairly extensive, scattered retouchings in the sky and along the upper margin and fewer scattered retouchings and strengthenings to the foreground and animals. Stretches of the foreground appear untouched, such as the faces of the boar and the central dog. Offered in a stained wood and parcel gilt frame in good condition.

Catalogue Note

In 1999 (see Provenance), Hela Robels, author of the catalogue raisonné of Frans Snyders' paintings, proposed that Paul de Vos painted the animals, and Jan Wildens the landscape.
