Condition

The board support is flat and stable. To the naked eye the paint surface appears clean and in good original condition with the impasto well preserved. Inspection under UV light revealssome minor retouchings in the sky upper right, a very small area in the cactus at centre, and little strengthenings in the white tunic. These are not obtrusive. Overall in good condition. Offered in painted golden wooden frame with some minor chips.

Catalogue Note

Discart exhibited at the Paris Salon in 1884, though very little is known of the remainder of his career. He painted Orientalist subjects through the 1920s, however, and judging from the inscription "Tanger" on many of his works, it is highly likely that he visited the Moroccan city (see the work sold New York, Sotheby's, 22 October 2009, lot 18).
