Catalogue Note

This drawing is by the German artist Hans Rottenhammer who spent the majority of his life in Italy, for the most part in Venice, where he was heavily influenced by the art around him.  The previous attribution, Circle of Paolo Veronese, reflects the Italianate style of this composition and the influence of the Venetian school in particular.  The present drawing can be compared to Minerva and the Muses of the Helicon,1 a drawing Rottenhammer executed during his sojourn in Venice.
