Catalogue Note

Although Keman hailed from Alsace and trained as a miniaturist in Paris, by 1792 he had immigrated to England. He soon achieved success in London where he was patronized by a number of noble families. In 1796 he moved to Bristol and remained there until returning to the capital in 1807. In 1805 his status as a leading artist was officially recognised when he was appointed miniature painter to Ernest Augustus, Duke of Cumberland, later King of Hanover (1771-1851).
