Catalogue Note

Purser was a painter and architect. He studied at the Royal Academy Schools and exhibited architectural subjects and landscapes at the Academy from 1805 until 1834. In 1817 20 he travelled in Italy and Greece with the architect George Ledwell Taylor, acting as a draughtsman. During 1820s and 1830s he went on further journeys in the Near East. His paintings show the delights of Constantinople in the early 19th century. Many of his watercolours served as illustrations for travel books.
