Condition

The colours in this work have survived exceptionally well. They remain strong, fresh and bright. There is some very minor paper staining to the sheet, however, this can only be seen on close inspection. At the extreme left hand edge of the sheet, there are some small areas of pigment loss. The sheet has been laid down onto its original mount. The original mount may have been reduced in size.

Catalogue Note

Gowborrow lies to the north of Lake Ullswater in Cumbria, just above the Airey Force waterfall. A friend and pupil of Francis Towne (1739-1816), John White Abbott visited the Lake District in 1791 during his only extended journey outside the West Country. Another watercolour from this tour, entitled Airey Force in Gowbarrow Park, Ullswater was sold at Sotheby's, London, on the 19th November 1992, lot 66.
