Catalogue Note

Rushmore Hill is situated to the north-east of Sevenoaks in Kent. In this watercolour Henry Gilder looks south-west, beautifully illustrating the rolling Kentish landscape. In the distance, half hidden by trees stands a domed building. This is almost certainly Mereworth Castle, a Palladian mansion commissioned by John Fane, 7th Earl of Westmoreland (1685-1762).
