  • Black chalk on brown paper;

Condition

The sheet is not completely laid down but it is glued at the top margin to the mount. There are some water stains at the bottom of the sheet below the man's foot. The lower left hand corner of the sheet has been torn and there is a horizontal crease in the centre of the sheet that runs through the table and and along the man's arm. The chalk however remains fresh.

Catalogue Note

Bonvin did a number of intimate figure studies within domestic settings.  His approach was simplistic yet powerful and he produced many compelling works of everyday scenes inspired by some of the Dutch Masters, whose works he would have seen in the Louvre.

The study of the man in this drawing appears to be related to one of his paintings, Three men sitting at a table, painted in 1859, now in a private collection, Amsterdam.1
