Catalogue Note

These two large watercolours were most probably intended as picturesque souvenirs for travellers on the Grand Tour.  To satisfy the high demand for Italian views of architecture, landscapes and interiors, Volpato, together with Ducros, produced a series of hand-coloured engravings entitled Vues de Rome et ses Environs in 1780.  For comparable compositions depicting similiar views, see Volpato's engravings in Giorgio Marini, Giovanni Volpato 1735-1803, Bassano del Grappa 1988, p. 146, no. 235 and p.147, no. 255.
