Condition

Window mounted and laid down on very thin japan paper. Slight trace of an old fold in the middle of the drawing visible in the catalogue. There is also a slight trace of a fold where the paper has been hung to dry, also visible in the catalogue. At the top there is slight thinning of the paper in two places, the central section and on the left close to the margin. Some slight scattered foxing. Some small tiny brown stains at the top of the sheet visible in the catalogue image. Pen and ink and wash are fresh and the colour is not as red in original as the image reproduced in the catalogue. The image in the catalogue is slightly cropped at the bottom where Alfred Normand mark has been partly cut off.

Catalogue Note

A number of drawings with this subject were in the Beauchamp sale, part of an album of Giandomenico drawings formerly in the collection of Horace Walpole. Of that group, lot 76 was a particularly close variant of the present composition.
