Catalogue Note

This drawing, dated 1770, seems to predate the religious subjects which inspired Cades towards the later years of the century.  Very finished and polished, almost sculptural, this also shows the strong influence of Raphael.  Such drawings often do not relate to any known painted work, and were probably made as works of art in their own right.  They were very influential in the development of the Purist and Nazarene painters.
