Catalogue Note

The drawings in the Holy Family series are dated by George Knox to the period 1754-62, and appear to have been made as independent works of art.  None of the individual variations are connected with any painted project.  Taking just the few ingredients of the subject of the Holy Family, Tiepolo was able to produce a remarkable variety of compositions.  Some, like the present one, depict just the three key figures of the Christ Child and His parents.  In others, Giambattista incorporated additional elements, such as the young St. John the Baptist, various adoring angels, and hints of the setting, as we can see in the present sheet in the sketchy indication of an arch and a column in a landscape.  Knox has suggested that this series may have been executed around 1760, when Giambattista was incapacitated by gout and unable to work normally.
