Description

  • A pair of winged angels
  • a pair, both oil on panel

Provenance

Lady Henry Somerset (1851-1921) Reigate Priory, Surrey;
Thence by descent to Henry Charles Somers Augustus Somerset (1874–1945);
Thence by descent to the present owner.

Condition

Both panels are uncradled and have no splits, although the left angel has an old diagonal hairline crack running from the centre of the top edge to the angel's shoulder. Both are extremely dirty and covered with very degraded and yellowed varnish.The paint surface is unstable and lifting in many places on both panels, especially the lower left side of the left angel and the lower left and right sides of his companion. There have been one or two small losses to both panels which are mostly visible in the catalogue illustration. There have clearly been other losses in the flaking areas in the past for ultra violet light reveals a series of old repairs in these areas. The bodies, heads and wings of the angels appear much better preserved though there is some wear here too. Both panels are offered in later gilt wood frames with lozenge pattern decoration and beaded sight edges; numerous chips and damages.
