Condition

The canvas has an old re-lining which is a little rigid but has not flattened the paint surface. The canvas is now dirty and covered with a layer of discoloured varnish. Beneath this there are evident scattered retouchings throughout most of the darker areas of the background wall and to the edge and shadows beneath the table in the foreground. These have now discoloured and are visible in the catalogue illustration as well as to the naked eye, and are probably superfluous. The still life elements all appear to be very well preserved, with only minor intervention to the tails and shadows of the fish in the basket. There are some pinprick stable losses to the right margin. This lot is offered with a modern composite gilt wood frame in good condition.
