Description
- Franciscus Gijsbrechts
- A vanitas still life with a skull, a shield, an hour glass, books and papers on a tabletop
- oil on canvas
Condition
The catalogue illustration is a little blue in tone. The painting is in poor overall condition. The canvas was probably wrongly rolled in the past and a very uneven old relining has failed to correct this, with the upper half of the painting in particular troubled by old losses and creasing to the surface very visible in raking light. There are in additon to this numerous old repaired tears, the most notable of which include those of 10cm or more throughj the cloth on the table lower right extending through to the canvas edge, through the paper to the left of this, a diagonal tear running left to right through the skull and another running right to left following the edge of the drape lower right, and two large old tears or damages in the lower left corner. In addition to this the background has been extensively washed over and all the outlines of the still life elements strengthened. the central parts of the still life are much better preserved. The varnish is thick and shiny.
This lot is offered in a modern giltwood frame with cloth board sight edge
