Description

Condition

The canvas has an old relining and the back of the canvas is protected by a board affixed to the stretcher. The paint surface is in good condition though dirty and there is a fine craquelure running throughout the painting. The painting's surface is rather uneven; an old fold(?) mark which runs vertically from the centre right of the upper margin for approximately 25 cm. is visible in raking light and another possible fold or canvas join which runs horizontally about 25cm. in from the upper margin is also visible on the paint surface. There are two tears, approximately 15cm. and 20cm. in length, along this latter join/fold. There are two small old knocks centre right which have resulted in some slight paint loss, as is visible in the catalogue illustration. Inspection under UV light reveals fairly extensive scattered retouchings and infilling of craquelure across the painting. Offered in a modern gilt wood and plaster frame in good condition.
