Bolognese School, 16th Century

The support consists of a single vertical panel with a convex bow. Extensions of approximately 1.5 cm. have been added along each of the painting's margins. The extension along the upper margin has become detached and the lower and left hand extensions are loose. The loss along the upper margin has resulted in some light paint loss along the upper margin of the original panel. There is an old crack of approximately 20 cm. running from the left hand side of the lower margin to the Christ child's right shoulder. Previous retouchings to this area have become discoloured. There is another small old restored vertical split lower centre which measures approximately 5cm. The paint surface is dirty with a fine craquelure running throughout. Inspection under UV light is slightly impeded by the varnish covering the work but does reveal retouchings to the lower and right hand margins, scattered spot retouchings to John the Baptist's hair, the Madonna's clothing and to the saints on either side of the Madonna. Older retouchings to the right hand saint's forehead also fluroresce. Apart from the aforementioned retouchings to the crack the Christ Child appears untouched. Offered in a gilt wood and plaster frame in fair condition.
