Description

  • A river landscape
  • signed and dated lower right on boat: PB1698
  • oil on panel

Provenance

Anonymous sale, London, Sotheby's, 13 April 1983, lot 89, where acquired by the late husband of the present owner.

Condition

The panel has been laid down on to a modern support. The panel originally consisted of two horizontal planks joined in the centre. The upper plank has a 10 cm horizontal split running in from the left hand edge in the sky. The lower plank has three old horizontal splits: one running across the width of the panel just above the horizon, and two smaller ones of 8 and 10 cm, one just above the bigger split and the other in the lower left hand corner in the eel nets. The actual paint surface is in extremely good original condition, with virtually no signs of wear. Later intervention is confined only to retouchings along the repaired splits. The varnish has now discoloured. Offered with a later English carved and gilt wood swept frame, numerous damages.
