Donated to Ulverston Church in the 1820s by Col. Braddyl of Conishead Priory.
Condition
The canvas has an effective relining which is sagging slightly in the top right corner. The paint surface is secure under a glossy varnish. There are two minor damages in the lower left and lower right corner which have been retouched. Scattered further retouchings are visible to the naked eye and fluoresce under UV light. Offered in an ornate gilt wood and plaster frame with some old scattered losses.

A 19th-century copy after Rubens' original in the Galleria Borghese in Rome (see M. Jaffé, Rubens, Milan 1990, p. 148, cat. no. 15, reproduced). A portrait of Col. Braddyl and his family by Joshua Reynolds resides in the Fitzwilliam Museum in Cambridge.
