Condition

STRUCTURE The canvas has been lined. PAINT SURFACE The painting appears to be in very good condition overall with no apparent damage or loss of paint. There is a fine uneven craquelure overall which is consistent with the painting's age. This is concentrated mainly in the darker pigments of the jacket. ULTRAVIOLET Examination under ultraviolet light reveals some scattered minor retouching to the background and peripheral areas. There is also retouching to an old repaired hole in the upper right in the drapery fold of the curtain, measuring approx. 1 in by 1 in. There is also a minor horizontal tear across the bridge of the sitter's nose measuring approx. 1 in. Otherwise the painting remains in good overall condition. FRAME Held in a gilt plaster frame.
