Description
- Willem Key
- Portrait of an elderly lady of the van Heemstra family of Friesland, holding a pair of gloves and with her right hand resting on a skull
- charged with the arms of the Martena de Burmania and the van Heemstra families of Friesland and inscribed and dated upper right: AETAT. 70/ 1617
- oil on panel
Condition
The support consists of three uncradled vertical planks, held by battens on the reverse. The joins have opened and are visible to the naked eye. There is a 12cm vertical split running up from the bottom edge of the central panel to just below the glove. The painting is in reasonably good overall condition. The paint surface shows signs of possible incipient flaking upper right. Inspection under ultra violet light reveals mostly only scattered old discoloured retouchings and strengthenings, notably in the folds of the sitters costume where the paint surface has become a little worn. The largest damage woudl be appear to be a 2 by 2 cm repaired loss in the upper right hand corner.
The lot is offered with a later gilt wood frame with laurel leaf decoration and beaded sight edge in good condition.
