Condition
The support consists of three uncradled vertical planks. The central plank has an old split which extends vertically down through and into the cheek of the sitter, and is now held by battens affixed to the reverse. There is repaired diagonal 8 cm split or damage to the join between this and the right hand panel just above the sitters collar. The painting is in quite good overall condition. The paint surface has suffered from wear in parts, notably on the right hand side, allowing the grain of the wood to show through. Inspection under ultra voilet light reveals no major intervention; the principal repairs are to a vertical line of small losses in the background above the sitters left shoulder, and to a similar line running from his bear to the tips of his fingers in the centre. Apart from this restoration is confined to scattered local retouchings. The varnish is shiny and even.
The lot is offered with a later gilt wood frame with laurel leaf decoration and beaded sight edge in good condition.
