- oil on canvas, in a fine carved and gilt wooden frame
Condition
STRUCTURE
The canvas has been lined.
PAINT SURFACE
The painting appears to be in very good condition with no apparent damage or loss of paint except for evidence of very minor abrasion at the canvas edges caused by rubbing with the frame. A little surfce dirt is visible in the upper left however the painting would appear to have been recently cleaned.
ULTRAVIOLET
Examination under ultraviolet light reveals several old campaigns of scattered minor retouching. There appears to have been minor repaired areas of damage in the centre left whcih correspond with two patches on the reverse. There is also evidence of a vertical repaired tear measuring approx. 3 in. in the rim of the hat, and an old old diagonal repaired tear measuring approx. 10 in. which runs from the top of his ruff to the shoulder and likewise corresponds to a patch verso.
