Provenance

Anonymous sale, Paris, Galerie Charpentier, 5 December 1955, lot 1-5, when acquired by
H.E. Jorge Ortiz Linares and Graziella Patino de Ortiz Linares;
Thence by descent.

Condition

The following condition report is provided by Rebecca Gregg, who is an external expert and not an employee of Sotheby's. The original canvas appears in a good condition; there are no obvious planar deformations and the overall tension appears good. The adhesion between the original and the lining canvas also appears good. The stretcher appears sound. The paint layers appear in good condition; there are no recent damages or loss. There is a network of fine craqulure which appears stable. The overall adhesion between the paint and ground layers and the support appears good. The paint appears relatively recently restored, there are scattered retouching over areas of abrasion or distinct loss. These are primarily located along the craqulure and the stretcher bar along the right edge. The most significant area is glazing around the figures in the boat in the lower quadrant of the painting. There is also glazing over an area of thinness in the lower right quarter. None of this is visually disturbing. There are small scattered remnants of an older varnish layer present; these are visible under ultra violet examination. A modern varnish layer has been applied overall, which is even in appearance. The painting was examined in the frame.
