Condition

STRUCTURE The canvas has been lined. PAINT SURFACE The painting appears to be in very good condition with no apparent damage or loss of paint. ULTRAVIOLET Examination under ultraviolet light reveals the presence of a discoloured varnish which has been selectively cleaned. There is also evidence of extensive scattered but minor areas of cosmetic retouching and infilling to old craquelure concentrated in the central belt of the sky. Elsewhere there are areas of minor retouching in the landscape and also very minor strengthening to the horse in the undercarriage and legs, however the horse's head and body are for the most part untouched. FRAME Held in a plaster and gilt wood frame.
